Insolvency Service tracks down £450,000 in unclaimed DRO fee refunds

By: uk.finance.yahoo.com29 Sept 2026
The Insolvency Service is trying to trace thousands of people owed refunds after paying a £90 fee for a debt relief order (DRO) but never completing their application. The fee, charged between 2016 and April 2024, was scrapped last year.

Around £450,000 remains unclaimed. Of roughly 5,100 customers contacted since November 2025, only about 1,200 have so far received refunds, with sums varying depending on whether fees were paid in full, overpaid, or from multiple incomplete applications.

The Insolvency Service urged affected individuals to contact it directly, noting that outdated contact details have hampered tracing efforts, and warned people to be alert to impersonation scams.
