Overdue accounts flag higher insolvency risk for Scottish builders

By: Midlothian View6 Oct 2026
Research by insolvency practitioner Clarke Bell found Scottish building firms with overdue accounts at Companies House were 4.7 times more likely to collapse or be struck off within a year than those filing on time. The study tracked 19,877 Scottish trades companies over 12 months.

Of 401 Scottish firms with overdue accounts, 49.6% had entered insolvency, been removed from the register or faced strike-off a year later, against 10.6% of those up to date. The pattern matches the UK-wide picture.

Clarke Bell's John Bell advises homeowners to check a builder's accounts before paying deposits, search The Gazette for winding-up petitions, and pay by credit card for added protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.
