Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op falls into administration, 25 jobs go

Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op, Scotland's oldest worker-owned cycling retailer, has entered administration after months of financial pressure. Around 25 jobs have been lost and its Canonmills and Aberdeen stores have closed.

A management-led buy-out has rescued the rest of the business, with trading continuing at four stores: Bruntsfield and Giant Store in Edinburgh, Giant Store Stirling and a branch in Newcastle.

Managing director Alan Nestor blamed rising costs, a weak economy and a tough retail market. The firm, founded in 1977, said management is now focused on rebuilding around its remaining locations.
