Hospitality insolvencies drop in August but risks loom for autumn

By: Business Sale Report26 Sept 2026
UK accommodation and food service insolvencies fell to 233 in August 2026, down 24% on July and 12% year-on-year, according to Insolvency Service figures. RSM UK credited hot weather and the football World Cup for boosting trade.

RSM UK's Saxon Moseley and Gordon Thomson warned the recovery remains fragile, citing geopolitical uncertainty, possible interest rate rises, legislative changes and government policy ahead of October's Autumn Budget as risks. Thomson noted historical debts could still undermine otherwise viable businesses if autumn trading disappoints.

Despite the dip, the sector recorded 3,201 insolvencies in the 12 months to August 2026, the third-highest of any UK sector.
