Liberty Steel Newport enters liquidation with about 170 staff

By: Wales Online26 Oct 2026
Liberty Steel Newport, the Welsh steelworks that was the first venture in Sanjeev Gupta's steel group, has entered liquidation. Mark Fry of Begbies Traynor and Benjamin Wiles and Robert Armstrong of Kroll Advisory were appointed joint liquidators earlier this month.

Latest status: Liberty Steel Newport Limited – Winding-up petition (12 Oct 2026)

The appointment followed a voluntary winding-up sought by director Iain Hunter. Siemens Financial Services, a creditor, had lodged a winding-up petition in September. Creditors must submit details of their claims by 19 November. The company employs around 170 people and last filed audited accounts in 2019.

Separate entity Liberty Steel Property Newport, which held property assets, is not covered by the liquidation. Greensill Capital, itself in administration since 2021, is a major creditor of the group.
