Insolvencies edge up 1% in August as administrations surge

By: Credit Connect21 Sept 2026
Insolvency Service figures show 1,946 business insolvencies in England and Wales in August 2026, up 1% on July but 3% below August 2025. Administrations rose 44% month on month, driven largely by real estate cases linked to the collapse of lender Market Financial Solutions.

Of the total, 314 were compulsory liquidations, 1,431 creditors' voluntary liquidations, 182 administrations and 19 company voluntary arrangements, with no receiverships recorded. CVLs made up 74% of cases but fell versus July and August 2025, while compulsory liquidations rose.

R3's Sonia Jordan and Azets' Blair Milne linked the administrations spike to over 250 connected real estate firms collapsing since March, alongside rising costs, HMRC debt recovery action and weakening consumer spending.
