Personal insolvencies in England and Wales dip slightly in August 2026
Insolvency Service figures show 11,644 people entered personal insolvency in England and Wales in August 2026, down 2% on July but 3% higher than a year earlier. The total comprised 725 bankruptcies, 3,880 debt relief orders and 7,039 IVAs.
Bankruptcies rose 5% month-on-month and 14% year-on-year, continuing a trend of elevated levels since March 2026. IVAs fell 4% on July but were 8% up on August 2025, while DRO numbers held broadly steady.
Breathing space registrations totalled 5,012, down 32% year-on-year. R3's Sonia Jordan warned of further pressure on household budgets from mortgage costs and food inflation.
