Property sector drives sharp rise in August company insolvencies

By: City AM19 Sept 2026
Insolvency Service figures show 1,946 companies entered insolvency in England and Wales in August, broadly flat on July but down on August 2025. Administrations jumped 44% month on month and 60% year on year, led by over 250 real estate firm collapses.

Compulsory liquidations also rose, up eight per cent on July, as creditors and HMRC pursued debts more aggressively, while voluntary liquidations fell.

Insolvency practitioners warned of continuing distress in building materials and hospitality, citing rising energy costs and wage increases, with further pressure expected ahead of next month's Budget.
